2003 Game Summary

The North scored a touchdown with 26 seconds left in the game to defeat the South in the 3rd Annual East Coast Bowl game played at Historic Cameron Field in Petersburg, VA.

Travis Motley, Quarterback from Mansfield College, overcame what looked to be a game ending interception to lead his team down the field and eventually find Hasan Jones (Elizabeth City State) in the back of the end zone for a 5 -yard touchdown pass and what would prove to be the game winning touchdown. The drive was set-up by a blocked field goal by Dan Woodard (Slippery Rock) and a long 3rd down pass from Motley to Conrad Singh (Hampden-Sydney). Singh, who just finished a record -breaking season with Hampden-Sydney, finished the game with 9 receptions for 104 yards and 1 Touchdown.

The South rebounded from 2 touchdowns in the span of twenty seconds by the North in the first quarter to take a 20-16 lead at the half. Early in the first quarter Erie Williams (Wingate) took a Jonathan Clark punt 73 yards for the first score of the game. On the ensuing possession a Kevin Jones (Virginia State) pass was tipped and intercepted by James Kostack (Wesley College) and returned 26 yards for another quick score. Nick Briley (Virginia State) got the South on the board with a 9 -yard strike from Joel Ward (Livingstone). Joel Ward found Jerome Leslie (Virginia Union) from 20 yards out on what was one of the best catches of the day to bring the South within 2 points. Joel Ward orchestrated a drive to end the half as he snuck in from 1 yard out to put the South ahead at the half.

Terry Meng (Presbyterian) opened up the 2nd half with a bang as he caught a 65 -yard touchdown pass from Kevin Jones. Conrad Singh caught, his only touchdown pass to end the 3rd quarter, an 8 -yard pass from Rodney Milbourne (Winston-Salem State). The 4th quarter was a battle of defenses. With time running down and the North driving, Nelson Lee Johnson (Virginia Union) grabbed his second interception of the game and what looked to be the nail in the coffin for a South victory. Jonathan Clark lined up to attempt a 47 yard field goal that was blocked by Dan Woodard and led to the drive that turned Travis Motley into a hero in the eyes of his North All-Stars and the 3,000 plus who attended the game.
