South Secures First Series Win
North still leads overall series 3-1

Petersburg, VA – The South All-Stars were able to rebound from early miscues to defeat the North All-Stars by a score of 27-14 in the 5th Annual East Coast Bowl at Historic Cameron Field.
Both teams traded possessions early on with not much offensive production. The North choose to stick to the running game as Derrick Stickles (West Liberty) had two good carries around the end on the North’s second possession. The drive stalled and North punter Erik Contos (Delaware State) pinned the South team inside the 20.

On the third play after the punt, Matt Vance (Fairmont State) picked off a Dane King (Henderson State) pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to break the scoreless draught. After the kickoff, the South team went three and out to set-up the only other score of the first quarter. On the first play after the punt, Chris Roncketti (Methodist) scrambled away from pressure from the South defensive front and found Antwun Williams (Virginia State) for a 60-yard touchdown strike. Virginia State wide receiver Antwun Williams had 3 receptions for 96 yards and 1 TD. A 35-yard Chris Castillo (Westminster) field goal early in the second quarter put the South on the board. On the next possession, Quarterback Mike Lomas (Widener) found Guy Smith (Marist) over the middle, but linebacker Terrance Leverett (Newberry) jarred the ball loose with a big hit and safety Chuck Jones (Cumberland) scooped up the fumble and made a couple great moves to get the ball inside the twenty. A 1-yard Dion McIver (Shaw) plunge was enough to bring the score to 14-10. With just over two minutes to go in the half it was time for a little trickery for the South. Quarterback Darrell Nesbitt (St. Augustine) threw a lateral to quarterback Dane King (Henderson St) who then looked back across the field to find Nesbitt with a wall of blockers. Nesbitt weaved his way around the North defense for a 55-yard score and a 17-14 lead. Just before the half, North kicker Musa Conteh (Virginia St) lined up to attempt a 54-yard field goal. The kick was short in the end zone, but Torrance Nunnally was there to return it well past mid-field. King found wide receiver Eddie Montgomery (St. Augustine) on a quick slant and the South’s Chris Castillo banged his second field goal of the game as time expired and the South went to half with a 20-14 lead.

The second half was a defensive showcase as several “big hits” brought the crowd to their feet with excitement. The South got a meaningless touchdown on a Travis Mosely (North Greenville) 10-yard run late in the fourth quarter, but it was enough to ice the South’s first win in the five year East Coast Bowl history. East Coast Bowl Vice-president & Director of Recruiting Jeremy Toombs was very pleased with the end result, he stated, “After last year we went into this fall with two goals. First, we wanted to get some I-AA guys in the game and we were successful in doing that. Second, we wanted to expand our recruiting scope to encompass athletes from Gulf South and Mid-western schools and we were able to do that. The level of competition was outstanding and the feedback we continue to get in very positive”.
