Panthers Prowl in Petersburg

Petersburg, VAThe Petersburg Generals have announced the signing of two Adelphi University Panthers to the roster.

Adelphi University is a NCAA Division II program located in Garden City, NY, and is a member of the East Coast Conference.  The Panthers have visited the Petersburg Sports Complex in the early spring of 2007 to play in weather that did not allow them to play in the north.

Michael Scudero, 6-2, 200, is a sophomore left-handed pitcher whose hometown is Massapequa, NY.  In 2007, Scudero made 14 appearances on the mound, including 12 starts with a record of 4-3 with an ERA of 5.23, while finishing third on the team in innings pitched (72.1) and strike outs (63).  Scudero held opponents to a .277 batting average in his freshman stint.  Currently, Scudero has a 1-1 record with an ERA of 3.86 for the Panthers.

Chris Weidlein, 6-4, 230, is also a sophomore who handles the duties at third base and is also a relief pitcher that resides in Merrick, NY.  In 2007, Weidlein made 12 appearances on the mound and saw time in 30 games at third base, including 28 starts.  On the mound, Weidlein did not allow an earned run in 10.2 innings pitched, striking out 10, while posting a 0.00 ERA, with two wins and three saves.  At the plate, Weidlein collected 27 hits, including seven doubles and two home runs, and also scored 22 runs and drove in 16.  Currently, Weidlein has a batting average of .286 with two runs and two RBI.

“Having Scudero and Weidlein will add tremendous depth to our roster.  We are very pleased to have these two players come down and play for us.  Scudero and Weidlein saw a good amount of innings last year as freshmen and had great numbers in their first year of college baseball,” said Assistant Coach Ryan Leary.  “Scudero is a great left-handed starting pitcher and Weidlein is a big third baseman who swings a bat and can also shut hitters down from the mound.”

The Petersburg Generals season tickets are now for sale.  There will be 29 home games with one of the games being an exhibition game against Catawba Valley Stars.  The 2008 season is the ninth season in the Coastal Plain League.  The Coastal Plain League is a summer wood bat collegiate league that features teams in Virginia and the Carolinas.  For more information on the Petersburg Generals please visit www.petersburgsports.com or call (804) 722-0141.  For more information on the Coastal Plain League visit www.coastalplain.com.
