Generals Achieve Weekly Awards

            Petersburg, VAThe Petersburg Generals have announced that two members of the 2008 roster have been honored as Players of the Week.

            Erskine College’s sophomore Chas Anthony was selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas baseball Player of the Week during the second week of the 2008 season. 

Anthony helped his team go to a 4-0 record for the week that included a sweep of Conference Carolinas rival, St. Andrews.  Anthony started off the week by going 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and a home run against Lenoir Rhyne with his home run proved to be the winning run.  In the first game against St. Andrews, Anthony went 4-5 with a double, a home run, and three RBI.  For the week Anthony had a batting average of .563 with two home runs, three doubles and five RBI, while scoring eight runs and a slugging percentage of 1.125.  

            The second Generals player to be honored with a weekly award was Chowan University’s freshman Chris Nelson.  Nelson was awarded the NCCAA Division I baseball Pitcher of the Week.  While setting a new school record for strikeouts, Nelson struck out 15 batters against Fairmont State.  Nelson pitched eight innings, giving up only five hits, two walks, and one run.  

            Erskine College has improved to a 12-0 record and ranks #29 in the polls.  Anthony is batting .455 with five doubles, one triple, and 4 home runs while having 16 RBI and scoring 14 runs.  Chowan University improved to a 9-3 record.  Nelson keeps his record on the mound at 3-0 in just three starts with 19 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts and five earned runs with an ERA of 2.37.  
             

            Generals’ fans are able to purchase their season tickets at anytime.  The Generals have 29 home games this season, with one of those being an exhibition game against Catawba Valley Stars, from the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League.  The Petersburg Sports Complex is also adding a carnival midway to its facilities.
